The return of cooler weather signals the return of one of Statesboro’s, and the surrounding area’s, most anticipated events of the year. On Monday, October 17th, 2016, at 5pm a parade through downtown Statesboro kicks-off the 55th Annual Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair. Themed floats, classic cars, bands, beauty queens, and more will cruise, flip, twirl, and march along North and South Main Streets. Out front of the Statesboro Convention and Visitors Bureau you can catch the parade and join in with the community and visitors as they celebrate the launch of a week’s worth of family fun festivities. Floats decorated in this year’s theme, “Farmers: We Have a Good Thing Growing,” will be judged for cash prizes.
The Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair, which runs from October 17th-22nd, draws in crowds of over 60,000 people from Bulloch County and the surrounding six counties. The fair is one of the few remaining fairs that features a traditional traveling midway and also a regional agricultural fair that showcases local flavor of “days gone by”. Craft, agriculture, homemaking exhibits and contests, live entertainment, historical displays, and an assortment of food vendors accompany the fair every year. The Statesboro CVB will even have a booth where you can make a unique memory to remember your visit to the fair! – and be sure to tag us on social media #VisitStatesboro
The Heritage Village is a section of the Fairgrounds that holds a barnyard with livestock, an old farmhouse, blacksmith demonstrations, antique farm implement displays, an old general store and more. Crowd favorites, Sam’s Petting Zoo and Rosarie’s Racing Pigs return again this year too. Visitors can also enjoy performances by Extreme Illusions and Escapes.
Amusements of America has worked with the Kiwanis Club for over 25 years to provide an exciting midway with all the major staple carnival rides, games, and even a special Kiddie Land section devoted to small children. Of course no fair would be complete without carnival food – funnel cake, turkey legs, candied apples, cotton candy, plus more – and the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair is no exception! There are numerous midway and local food booths throughout the Fairgrounds, including The Famous Pancake House, which is always a crowd favorite each year.
Admission to the fair is $5, plus the cost for ride tickets. However, make sure to check-out the schedule for the different daily specials throughout the week for deals for free admission or wrist stamps for unlimited rides. Ride tickets are also available at the Statesboro Convention and Visitors for $10 for full-sheet of 20 tickets (which is half price) from now until Monday, Oct. 17th at 4pm. So Come One. Come All. To the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair, and help us celebrate 55 years of tradition!
