Georgia Southern athletics have always been a popular attraction for students, fans, parents, Statesboro residents, and even those just passing through on their way to Savannah or other destination. With the recent move to the Sunbelt, the athletes, coaches and staff are doing a phenomenal job of making a name for themselves within the new conference. This spring, the basketball team seems to be following in the football program’s footsteps, as they recently reclaimed the number one spot in the conference rankings.
Hanner Fieldhouse has achieved record attendance and sold out home games like never before. The atmosphere in Hanner is unlike any other, as the crowd roars at almost any moment, the cheerleaders raise their pom poms after each play, the band echoes throughout the stands, and fans stand and cheer throughout the majority of the competition.
With crowds selling out the stadium for regular- season games, upcoming games may attract even higher numbers. The Eagles are now ranked second overall in the Sunbelt Conference after a recent University of Louisiana- Monroe. Even though the Eagles dropped one spot in the rankings, they still have eight important games left in their regular season before the Conference Championships. Three home games remain to be played in Hanner Fieldhouse, and the team is working hard towards accomplishing their goal of winning another championship for GSU.
The team cannot operate without the town behind them cheering on their games until each final buzzer, so head to Hanner Fieldhouse in your blue, white or gold and let your voice be heard as the team battles to stay at the number one spot in the Sunbelt!
